I'm sure you will get about a billion responses and start an argument over mac vs pc by starting this thread, haha. But anyway, if you want something cheap for just school and messing around, you can get a decent hp/compaq for 500-600 bones. If your looking into something higher end for gaming or graphics, Dell makes some nice gaming laptops. I believe they bought out Alienware. And if you want to look cool and trendy in a coffee shop while doing your homework, you can always get a mac :D A good idea might be to do some research by looking up cnet reviews. You're likely to get a million biased opinions here. My opinion is a lower-mid range dell of hp will be plenty if its just for homework and internet.

Ya, all computers eventually slow down after awhile. Its just a matter of keeping the hard drive free of spyware and crappy applications. Just re-install Windows if things start getting crappy. Thats Microsoft's idea of maintenance, a complete re-install :-P

Ya, I got a HP that costs like $550 and then I went ahead and bought Office student edition software, or whatever it's called. Basically it's Powerpoint, excel, word, and one point or something for like $100. I think with tax and all it ended up costing me $703 and it's working out pretty good. I might get an external harddrive though because mine comes with a 200GB hd I think, and I have a lot of music and pics, but I'm just picky and don't like a lot of clutter on my comp

Don't ever buy anything from Alienware. You can build a better computer for a lot less money if you shop around on sites like newegg.
To yamaha537, don't worry so much about your RAM (memory) if all you're going to be doing is listening to music and stuff. If you do anything intense like gaming or video editing, then I would shoot for a computer with a lot of RAM. You'll be fine, though.
Pretty much any laptop will be fine for your purposes. Thinkpad, Dell, Compaq, HP, Apple Macbook, whatever.

Man honestly I think you should be fine... I was talking about an external harddrive, but like I said, it's only cause I'm picky and maybe a little OCD when it comes to having a bunch of stuff on my comp. Mine is a pretty basic, like the equivalent of having manual locks and windows in a car w/ no cruise control, model, and I have a few pics, and couple thousand songs and my comp still isn't maxed out and bogged down. I think Dell has a laptop w/ a 80 GB harddrive for almost $600, but I got my Hp for less than that with a 200 GB harddrive and built in web cam (which comes in really handy for the homemade porn, haha). Ofcourse there may be other reasons why the Dell was more expensive, but I'm not sure. Like everyone else has said though, when it comes to just listening to a little music, saving a few pics, internet, and basic student programs, you should be fine with a very basic model, so I would just avoid spending too much money cause it probably wouldn't be necessary in your case. I would just recommend getting Office Home and Student right off the bat cause it's really handy for students.

2gb of memory is plenty if its the ram you are talking about. As for an external hard drive. I bought a 500gb one for 100 bucks. You can store almost all the homemade porn you want :D

I actually write my screenplays in Starbucks. I'll only do it out here, though. I don't think people in the High Desert know how to write, so they don't know what I'm doing.
On topic: get a Mac. <333

If you buy a PC, it's going to crash and possibly catch on fire within the first week. Your bank account will be hacked and you will have identity theft out the kazoo. Everything you own will soon be gone and you will find yourself struggling to support your family after losing your job because of the inability to work because of your new depression due to PC computer problems.
If you buy a Mac, you will be virus free until the end of your days and your computer will work better and faster than you've ever known a computer could. Not only will all of your computer tasks be more efficient, but co-workers and friends will soon begin to like you even more because you're a trendy mac owner. People that never knew your name before will now invite you over for Saturday afternoon barbecues and other Mac owners will invite you in their club that meets every Thursday night to discuss all things Apple.

Haha, nice. You forgot to add that if you buy an iPhone, Steve Jobs and AT$T get the rights to your first born. I've had pc's for years, funny none of the things you mentioned ever happened to me :D

Haha I've never owned anything but a PC and I've never had those problems either! I like PC's just fine with Windows XP. I'm really not a fan of Vista at all, though. The first thing I would do if I bought a PC is figure out how to get XP on it. My mom and I share a laptop with Vista on it but I'm too lazy to put XP on it.

HP is the way I go for both my editing system and my laptop for college right now which has Photoshop and all that jazz on it and it runs fine with 3 gigs of ram.

Yeah I like my Compaq laptop but all of the useless HP programs that are on the computer when you buy it are really annoying.
