LOS ANGELES - Mothers Against Drunk Driving wants a stricter rating on "Grand Theft Auto IV (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/24405072/#)."
The organization is calling on the Entertainment Software Ratings Board, the independent organization that assigns video-game ratings, to reclassify "GTA IV (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/24405072/#)" as an Adults Only game. The action-driving game, which includes the ability to drive while intoxicated, is currently rated Mature.
"Drunk driving is not a game, and it is not a joke," MADD said in a statement released Tuesday. "Drunk driving is a choice, a violent crime and it is also 100 percent preventable."

MADD is also calling on publisher Take-Two Interactive and developer Rockstar Games to consider stopping distribution of the game — which analysts expect to sell 9 million copies and make over $400 million at launch — "out of respect for the millions of victims/survivors of drunk driving."

In the critically acclaimed open-world game, players have the choice of patronizing a bar and then attempting to drive drunk. While virtually under the influence, the screen becomes blurred and the controls are more difficult to use. Players also have the option of hailing a taxi or walking. The intoxication effects wear off after a few minutes in the game.

"We have a great deal of respect for MADD's mission, but we believe the mature audience for 'Grand Theft Auto (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/24405072/#) IV' is more than sophisticated enough to understand the game's content," Rockstar Games said in a statement to The Associated Press on Wednesday. "For the same reason that you can't judge an entire film or television program by a single scene, you can't judge 'Grand Theft Auto IV' by a small aspect of the game."
"GTA IV" follows the criminal exploits of protagonist Niko Bellic, an imigrant-turned-gangster who travels from Eastern Europe to Liberty City, the game's fictional locale based on New York City. As Bellic, players can hijack cars, earn cash for criminal activities, shoot innocent bystanders and visit strip clubs.
MADD declined to comment further about their statement.

I'm not a gamer but this game is highly addictive. You can do everything you could in real life but you don't do because you don't want to get into trouble.

As for MADD's position, I tried driving drunk once in the game and I won't do it again. It doesn't make it cool to do it in real life either...

Yea it should work fine, but I dont think you can play it online.

Has anyone played GTA IV online? What happens? Is it like the same city with everybody running around? do you complete the same missions?

They gave a 30-day trial with the game, but they said there was to be exclusive downloadable content available this fall so I keep it for then...

Theres a bunch of different modes.
You can do party play, where you and 15 of your friends have the city to yourself and there are no rules, you just do whatever.
Theres team deathmatch, where you just go for kills and such. Team with the most kills wins.
Theres turf wars, where you have to kill the other team and take the money from their dead bodies, team with the most cash wins.

Those are the only 3 Ive played, theres something like 15 different modes though so Im not sure what the others are.

Well, I played for a few days. Some of which included me and demon screwing around and I haven't touched the game since. I don't know why. I like it I just haven't played much xbox lately and when I do its still COD4 90% of the time.

Ill have to get online and play with some of you guys and try to get into it.

It was annoying me that i havnt finished it yet, not sure why but i had to get it done. ive spent probably an extra 10 hours on random little stuff, easiest little mission thing was walking past a dude on the street whos high and hands you 100 bucks. mission completed, 100 bucks richer. haha.

Haven't ever played any GTA games but with all this talk and taking a look at some youtube videos I started acquiring GTA San Andreas for PC. Can't wait to see what all the rage is about.

Also, will they port the new one out to the PC format?

I thought about renting this game when i was at blockbuster yesterday, but $8 is a lot of coin for a rental ;-) so maybe i'll splurge and rent it over the long holiday weekend.

My roommate bought the game and I became addicted. I beat it in three weeks after almost constant play and complete neglect of my final exams.

As for MADD: They need to be quiet and deal with more important issues concerning drunk driving. An aspect of a video game is simply not important.

Im pissed. I got like 30% done with the game and now it wont let me do missions. I walk into the arrows and they just fade away but nothing happens. According to my google research Im just going to have to start over.

Well my gf rented it from Blockbuster for me 2 weekends ago and I loved it. Last weekend when we had to return it, we went to Target and she ended up buying it for me. I'll probably spend a lot of time this week playing it since I'm still mono-ed out and I just have graduation and grad. practice for a total of like 8 hours this week.
