Hey fellas my buddy has an issue with the clutch on his 98 yz. He pulls the lever and gets not resistance, cable looks good but the lever the cable hooks to has too much play and spins around. To me it sounded like the push lever or pushrod is busted but I have never run into that before. He said the plates, basket look good. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated this is the last riding buddy I have that hasn't been lost to marriage and kids :puppydog: and this killed this weekends ride.:upset:
it may be that hub in the middle that pushes the steel plates. if its not that have him look into the pushrod assembly, including the gears in the ignition cover side to make sure everything is meshing up and engaging correctly. Also make sure the nut holding the inner hub in is tightened down all the way.
My yzs never had a problem with the basket, but i did destroy a couple inner hubs.

I would assume it's either #23 or #24 on that diagram.

I agree with Mike. If I had to pick one, I'd say that #24 is rounded or it isn't in the correct position. Regarding where #24 is, it is on the left side of the motor (ignition side). The rest of the clutch assembly is on the right side though.

Push rod comes out through the clutch side. It sits inside of #19. 24 would be the first thing i would check as well. Most likely it has chipped off the leverage point, but I have seen a broken rod cause them same deal. You don't want your buddies bike to have the same problem that was causing that though. We had to replace the entire case set on an 07 yz125 because a guy used too heavy of an oil and cooked the input shaft bearing.

One other possibility: Check that the inline slack adjuster didn't back out. It is the two nuts that are screwed together in the cable up near the handlebars. You make coarse adjustments with that and finer adjustments using the adjuster at the perch. If those nuts came loose your friend may have too much play in the cable.
Is part #24 moving with the cable?

From what I got in the first post, the actuator spins around, meaning the cable is working but I could have misinterpreted.
