Hey guys, I just flew back to Texas today. Funny story... not really from my standpoint but maybe from yours.
I have XM radio in my truck and it doesn't turn off when I turn off my truck. Not a big deal as long as I use my truck every day or two, which I do, so I never even think to turn off my radio receiver everyday. Unfortunately I didn't turn it off when I left for NL and 9 days later I get back and obviously I had to have my truck jumped off.
So anyways, right as my truck starts up, I notice it's really loud? While I had a brief moment where I was like, WTF? but then immediately I thought, it sounds like I don't have a catalytic converter so I looked under my truck and sure enough.......... Some mother F'ers straight up laid up under my truck, took a f'n saw, and cut my G-damned catalytic converter off..... G-damned F'n crack heads!!!! :upset::upset::upset::upset:
After a 10 hour flight, going through customs, and then having to jump off my truck, I find that some ******bags vandalized my truck. I then had to file a report, hope my insurance will cover it, and then drive 2 hours back home sounding like one of those gay ass wanna be speed racer homo's with the loud 4-bangers (my truck is a 4 cylinder Nissan)
Apparently the converter contains some platinum metal and has a pretty high street value, unfortunately for good honest people that work for their money, it costs the "victims" a lot more money than what the crackheaded losers can get for it.
Anyone else had this happen?

Was it in long term parking or at home?

Just a guess, but I'm thinking it wasn't at home!:lol:

It was at DFW "secure" parking.... as I was leaving the lot, they guy in his little booth tried to say it would be $65... I told the guy I wasn't about to pay a dime for parking in "secure" parking and then having my truck vandalized.

Sorry to hear about that.
You're right, the metal in the converter is worth some coin. It's a big problem and law enforcement is just starting to address it. What sucks is that it is so easy to do and there is nothing you can do to protect yourself against it - short of parking in the garage every night.
You might want to go around local scrap yards. Sometimes the converters are numbered and they also keep an eye out for people bringing more than one. See if they have gotten any in the past few days and get a list of names.

I've come to terms with the fact that I just got F'ed and the only cheap fix will be to just weld a pipe in place of the catalytic converter. If that'll quiet it down some, I might just do that. Could it harm the engine in any way running it without the converter?

Naw your engine should be fine. The converter just converts some of the gases in the exhaust to more ecofriendly gases. However, driving with no cat. is illegal...but if you don't want to spend a whole lot of money on a new converter, just take the shell of an old converter and put it in :) Still illegal but if you would happen to get a visual inspection you should pass....my automotive engineering teacher told us that one haha

you can get a magnaflow cat from summit for cheap, get some piping from parts store and buy a few exhaust clamps and it should work

It will run better than ever. I've seen guys take theirs out, ram a big screwdriver
thru the ceramic core, gutting it, and put it back in. Better mpg too.
ps.don't get caught. Federal Crime.

Ya, the basic concept (unless I'm mistaken) is turning carbon monoxide (CO) into carbon dioxide (C02), but I was told by someone (who honestly isn't a reliable source of information) that it would hurt the valves to run it like that for too long. I don't really understand how it could but I thought I'd just ask

You could potentially hurt the valves from having a converter that is plugged aka melted down. This happens when the cat. gets to hot from burning to many hydrocarbons(HC's) aka fuel. With it plugged there is going to be an excess build up of heat and you want to keep your valves as cool as possible. I can go dig up my class notes if you want better detailed info. As far as I can remember though, running with no converter isn't going to hurt the engine.

it wont harm it. My dads Dodge hasnt had one for a few years. The O2 sensor will read the differece with the cat gone and the ecu will "learn" to run the engine without one.
