I just read an article in the new Dirt Bike that gave me a new way to replace tires and I love it. Well, I love it as much as I can love something I hate.
Anyway, the gist of the method is to remove the tire from both sides, so that the rim falls into the middle. Then you can just rip off the tire and tube - almost without using the tire irons. (I used one to get it started then just pulled the wheel right out of the tire.)
Then, put the tube inside the new tire with a little air. Insert the valve stem through the hole in the rim before you do anything else and put the nut on. Run one side of the tire over the rim as far as you can go and then finish with tire irons. Shimmy the rim lock under that bead on that side.
Now just button up the remaining side as usual. You never have to play the game of "knuckle death" trying to put the tube inside the tire while half of it is on the rim. Gotta love it!
(At least as much as you can love something you hate.)
