Looks good man.

Hey if you want some good advice regarding audio and video in that man cave check out the AVS Forums. I've been learning stuff from them for a few years now while preparing to build my theater downstairs.

Nice lawn. I love how all you have to do in the midwest is mow, mow, mow. No watering, no fertilizer...

Got the satellite feed into the barn today. HD in the barn, ready for a 73" DLP or projector, not sure which yet.

Did he move to NE Texas? At first I was thinking Houston, but that's the actual asshole of America. Atleast it's not the taint (aka New Orleans)

I'm not sure which to buy yet. I'd like to be able to have the doors open when it's warm but I'm afraid with a projector I won't get the color definition I want. I've got 220 to the barn but I'm not really thrilled with with having an AC unit there.

Don't get a DLP TV. I have a 65" DLP TV in my living room with a ton of windows. It takes a huge hit with exterior light, and the viewing angle is HORRIBLE. Trust me you can spend less on an LCD projector and get a better and bigger picture.

I can give you some suggestions on projectors based on what the room looks like and what you want to do with it.

It's 36'x24' 10' ceiling. It will mainly be for movies and sports with an occasional XBox game.

Thanks!

Whoa. That's a ton of room. How big of a screen do you want?

copsey
10-07-2010, 04:01 PM
If projector 110-120" 60" LEDLCD or Plasma. With the projector It will be set dead center with a drop down screen and if I go the TV route It will be a corner unit I'll build.

It's a lot of room so I can keep the bikes on one wall and still park the car in it and have the space I want for everything else.

If you only want to go to 120" screen then you can get away with just about any projector. The thing I'd be more concerned about is sound. Trying to fill a volume that big is going to take some power. Any chance of putting up some walls to shrink down the area or does that kill the whole point of it? Also, about what % would you say you'd expect to use this area for tv, gaming, dvd movies, blu ray movies?

copsey

No walls, like you were saying it kinda kills the point. Mostly just watching games and playing xbox, no real movie stuff as I have a nice setup I'm putting together for the family room.

In that case I'd recommend the Optoma HD20 projector because it's only $900. It's plenty bright enough for a 120" screen. It doesn't have much of a zoom lense which is only valuable if you like to switch aspect ratios a lot for movies. So that's not a big deal to you because you're just going to be leaving it at 1 setting and forgetting about it, and you can mount it anywhere. The only problem you might have with it is that it's DLP, and some people suffer from the "rainbow effect" with DLP. If you do suffer from it or just want to upgrade to a better projector, get the Epson 8350. It'll cost you another $400, but you get a better picture and it's LCD.

As far as sound goes you only need a 5.1 setup. You can get a Pioneer VSX-520 from Newegg right now for $165 out the door (I think the sale ends today though). That's an awesome deal for what you get, and as long as you keep everything HDMI you won't have to change inputs on the display ever. The reciever handles all input changes. As far as power output, you won't know until you hook up your speakers and try it. I like a lot of power in my theater because we watch a lot of movies. For gaming and tv, the receiver may be powerful enough.

Speakers are a tough call because it's personal preference and budget. There's so much out there.

One thing to remember is if you know ahead of time that you want to dump a lot of power into your speakers by using amplifiers, then get a receiver with pre-outs. That Pioneer is a basic entry level receiver with no pre-outs. So you can only power the speakers with the receiver, no amplifiers.
