Going to purchase a Nikon for my wife. Two choices: D40 w/case 18-55 lense and 55-300 lense all used for $450 or new D3000 w/18-55 lense

Thanks

I got the D3000, I like it a lot. The lens is versatile enough, I mean you won't be able to get decent moto shots with it, but seeing as how it's for your wife, I'm assuming she isn't really going to be using it for that. When nI bought mine, I got it from Best Buy and it came with a free case (online only offer) although I don't know if they're still doing that.

I believe Nikon quit making the D40 but everything should go back and forth between the new ones and the old D40. I bought my girlfriend a D40 a year ago or so and I like it and the lenses work pretty well. It is really whether you want to go used or new.

It is funny that you post this now, I am looking at getting my fiance a new Nikon for Christmas and I am not sure what route to go. She wants to be able to do pretty much anything with it from moto to portraits. I was also wondering if any of the lenses from her other Nikon will be able to fit onto the digitals (it is a film camera). I don't know exact models as far as her camera/lenses...I can try to get that later.

You could use a film lens on a digital camera as long as the mounts are the same but 90% of the time you will get a vignette effect on all of your pictures. I would get the D40 though because of the lenses but if I was buying new and had the $ I would at least get a D90

ALL nikon lenses made since 1959 will fit, and any older N or S lenses will fit and work on the D40, but if you want to use any any real lenses, (D, F, AI) you're gonna have to buy a D90, as it is the cheapest body with a lens screw.

And **** digital. Keep shooting film, and spend $400 on a film scanner. Baller ass process with killer results. Those moto "photographers" that complained about the process are turds. Digital makes you lazy and you get inferior results.

Off topic, but I am digging your new site/blog.

dont worry, were keeping the film around for sure. there is just something about it that i love, and she does all her own deleoping etc. i just wouldnt mind having a digi around too. so d90 is what you suggest?

Thanks broo!

Mutual admiration club. I also dig your standards for moto video. I still try to watch some of your stuff every once and a while...good ****. Better than the rest.

All day, every day. I know digital cameras aren't really an investment, but a D90 is an investment. Aluminum/titanium body with REAL controls. It will last, and you won't have to upgrade every year. I still use my D70s, because it was made to last. These 1000 series cameras were not.
